Born in Kronstadt, RO, 1973
Live and work in Cologne, DE
Gert & Uwe Tobias work at the intersection of tradition and experimentation, developing a distinctive visual language that fuses folklore, abstraction, and popular culture. Known for their inventive use of the woodcut technique, the artists have transformed a historically rigid printing process into something flexible, layered, and painterly. Instead of carving into a block of wood, they cut individual motifs from plywood, roll them with color, and transfer them to canvas – building compositions through repetition, variation, and collage-like construction.
Their practice spans drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and large-scale works on canvas, all unified by a deep interest in material process and formal precision. Motifs from their archive – rooted in the myths and patterns of their Transylvanian upbringing – are continually reworked into new contexts, blending personal history with broader art historical references. With each piece, Gert & Uwe Tobias dissolve the line between art and craft, creating works that are at once rigorously composed and open to chance, inviting a renewed encounter with the symbolic and structural potential of image-making.
