Gert and Uwe Tobias have developed a distinctive series of typewriter drawings that challenge conventional drawing methods. Using mechanical typewriters, they create intricate patterns and figures by repeatedly striking the paper with letters, numbers, and symbols. This labor-intensive process yields images that blend textual and visual elements, blurring the boundary between language and art. The typewriter drawings are often smaller in scale compared to their woodcuts but maintain the same sense of mystery and narrative complexity. The use of the typewriter—a device associated with bureaucratic precision—introduces a mechanical rhythm into their artistic expression. However, this seemingly rigid tool becomes a means of organic creativity in the hands of the Tobias brothers. Their compositions feature abstract shapes, floral patterns, and anthropomorphic figures, all constructed through the systematic accumulation of typed marks. The repetitive patterns recall the decorative arts and textile traditions of their Romanian upbringing, while the textual origins of the marks add a conceptual layer to the images. Words and letters lose their linguistic function, becoming purely visual elements that contribute to the overall aesthetic of the artwork. Through their typewriter drawings, Gert and Uwe Tobias continue their exploration of the intersection between history, culture, and contemporary artistic practices, demonstrating how even the most utilitarian tools can become vehicles for imagination and narrative depth.
