Gardar Eide Einarsson’s Mining Rigs expand his ongoing exploration of value, ideology and control. This series of powder-coated steel sculptures – colored after Donald Judd’s RAL sketches – references early, home-built cryptocurrency mining rigs, now largely obsolete as mining has shifted to industrial-scale operations. By combining Beuysian ideas of the artwork as a repository of energy with minimalism’s use of outdated industrial forms, the work reflects on how technological systems quickly outgrow the narratives that first generated collective belief in them.

Einarsson's Mining Rigs highlights how ideas of decentralisation, freedom and individual empowerment often persist long after the underlying structures have changed. The artist’s practice, grounded in appropriation and cultural critique, reveals how images and systems shape our sense of agency – inviting viewers to consider how easily shared ideals can become illusions.
