"Permanent Green Light" continues Gardar Eide Einarsson’s ongoing exploration of painting at its most elemental: the simple act of covering the white canvas. Related to his Fluorescent Pink and Stainless Steel series, the work similarly treats color itself as a “found” element and adopts it as the title. Here, however, the phrase Permanent Green Light also suggests an open-ended message of permission and possibility – anything goes. The green hue further evokes associations with “green screens,” blank fields meant to be overlaid with any image, emphasizing the canvas as a space of potential projection and manipulation.

Einarsson consistently works with found and appropriated materials to interrogate the images that saturate everyday life and the ideological work they perform. His practice investigates themes of personal liberty, belonging, inclusion and exclusion, and propaganda, focusing on the role culture plays in maintaining ideological systems. He questions how artists – and art institutions themselves – are both embedded in dominant structures and, perhaps, capable of offering critical pathways beyond them.

Navigating the tension between personal freedom and the symbolic structures that shape social existence, Einarsson invites viewers to reflect on their own positions within these systems. Across media including installations, paintings, and sculptures, he approaches these concerns with a deadpan, often humorous sensibility, always with an acute awareness of the institutional frameworks that underpin contemporary art.
