Gert and Uwe Tobias have redefined the possibilities of the woodcut medium, using it as a central element in their artistic practice. Their large-scale woodcuts are characterized by bold colors, geometric shapes, and intricate patterns that blend traditional techniques with a contemporary sensibility. The brothers draw inspiration from their Romanian heritage, particularly the folklore and visual culture of Transylvania, which serves as a foundation for their imaginative compositions. The visual language of their woodcuts oscillates between abstraction and figuration, presenting enigmatic scenes populated by fantastical creatures, floral motifs, and architectural fragments. These elements, often arranged in symmetrical or mirrored patterns, evoke a sense of otherworldly harmony. The use of vibrant, contrasting colors enhances the dreamlike atmosphere of the works, inviting viewers to decipher their symbolic narratives. The tactile quality of the woodcut surface, with its visible grain and imperfections, emphasizes the physical labor involved in the creation process.
