Danmark under forvandling by Mads Gamdrup forms part of a larger project in which 14 Danish photographers were invited, between 2008 and 2010, to document and interpret the Danish landscape through an artistic lens. The project, Danmark under forvandling, was presented in book form as well as through a series of exhibitions at, among others, the Museum of Photographic Art in Odense, HEART Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Gl. Holtegaard, and Sophienholm.
In this series, Gamdrup builds on his sustained interest in how our perception of landscape is shaped, visually, culturally, and historically. The work consists of 40 photographs taken over the course of a year, primarily in the area around Tappernøje. Each image captures a place in a specific light and at a specific moment, from early morning haze to the sharp contrasts of the afternoon, and together they create a kind of quiet mapping of a country in constant negotiation, between nature and culture, history and the present, observation and meaning.
Gamdrup’s work with colour and his precise compositions reflect an interest in shifting photography’s documentary character towards something more sensory and investigative. In Danmark under forvandling, the landscape is not merely a motif but a surface on which time and transformation can be traced and felt, without being pinned down to a single narrative.
