There was a plethora of flags during this era, often home made affairs using classical (in this case Latin) phrasing and symbology. Einarsson is interested in the similarities between the flag and painting in terms of both format and scale and in terms of their function as a vehicle for DIY expression of politics and aesthetics
At a time of fragmented and contested identity, both in the United States and elsewhere the work is a reminder of how self, nation and ideology are both constructed and communicated.
