Haiku is also the name of a Japanese lyrical form built according to strict set of formal criteria. As a rule, a haiku poem is formed by 3 lines with 17 syllables, which are divided into groups of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. A haiku poem must also be written in the present and deal with nature.
Charlotte Brüel's Haiku objects are constructed in a similarly demanding way. Beads, skeletal parts, feathers, and pine needles are integrated into amorphous shapes, cut out of MDF, and transparent acrylic. An unorthodox use of expression possibilities taken across time and geography, where the individual material part appears as both motif and language. As universal entities, they contain an equally strong connection to nature and man-made. The individual parts of each object are connected in the oval shape - a dynamic shape in which part and whole mutually condition each other.
The parallel between the poem and the sculpture is thus not random either. Formally, both lyrical and sculptural discipline are conditioned by the ability of considerable precision. Both forms can be composed in ways that surprise and reveal. Despite its volumetric scale, the concentrated statements in Haiku objects contribute with extensive nuances of the content of life.
