The successful Greek actress and later Minister of Culture played a key role in reclaiming the marbles of the Parthenon for Greece. These marbles, removed from the Acropolis in Athens and held in the collection of the British Museum, were a driving force for Mercouri to restore the historical dismantling and reunite the material with its original location. Through emotional and cinematic storytelling, Mercouri connected with the marbles and expressed Greece's responsibility to safeguard Europe's history. Disrespecting Greece was, to Mercouri, disrespecting Europe's cultural cradle.
