Their large-scale woodcuts are characterized by bold colors, geometric shapes, and intricate patterns that blend traditional techniques with a contemporary sensibility. Most woodcuts are built up like a puzzle by placing wood panels onto a canvas. The shapes of these wood panels each have a corresponding counter form. Over time, a large collection of individual fragments and counter forms has been sorted and stored in boxes, like an archive. The artworks in the series "Missing Parts" are printed from these fragments, serving as a distinctive exploration of their significance within the broader context of the works. The tactile quality of the woodcut surface, with its visible grain and imperfections, emphasizes the physical labor involved in the creation process. Through their innovative approach, Gert and Uwe Tobias transform woodcuts into a platform for exploring identity, memory, and the intersection of tradition and modernity.
