The layered construction transforms the painted surface into a shallow, stage-like relief, where planes overlap and shadows become active compositional elements.
Moving between painting and object, the work collapses distinctions between image, support, and scenography. Drawing on the visual vocabulary developed by Carlos Amorales across his interdisciplinary practice, the abstract forms recall silhouettes, props, or fragments of theatrical backdrops. Removed from any fixed narrative, these shapes function as unstable signs that oscillate between figure and ground, legibility and abstraction.
By bringing what would traditionally remain background into the foreground, the work inverts conventional hierarchies of representation. The backdrop itself becomes the subject, suggesting a space where memory, absence, and “ghostly” presences linger within the architecture of the image.Exhibitions
