The Door Is OpenMarch 15 – May 25, 2014
KUNSTHALLE LINGEN, DEKunsthalle Lingen is presenting the first institutional solo exhibition of American artist Matthew Ronay, who was born in Louisville, USA, in 1976 and now lives in New York. The exhibition bears the metaphorical title The Door Is Open. Ronay has previously showcased his artistic work in solo exhibitions at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Murcia. He has also participated in group exhibitions, including this year’s Biennale in Lyon, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, and the Westphalian State Museum in Münster.Matthew Ronay’s sculptural works evoke mythological visions that touch upon the mystical and the strange, leaving a profound impression on a fundamentally human level. Working with materials such as wood, papier-mâché, and fabric, he explores dichotomies like male/female, life/death, light/darkness, and reality/dream. Both formally and conceptually, Matthew Ronay’s artistic universe draws inspiration from the spirituality and design of certain non-Western cultures, as well as the cosmology of science fiction. His interest in rituals and ceremonies is expressed in his works, which often incorporate elements reminiscent of talismans. Frequently, Ronay activates his pieces through performances, channeling his energy into the works and imbuing them with vitality.
Inspired in part by the writings of psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung, Matthew Ronay works intuitively to achieve an expression that resonates with us on a fundamental and universal level of the unconscious. His enigmatic sculptures and installations create peculiar connections to something primal and instinctively original, deeply rooted in the consciousness of modern humanity.
