SUPERFLEX · The Thorvald Bindesbøll Medal

Award

We congratulate SUPERFLEX upon their recieval of the Thorvald Bindesbøll Medal, 2025. The The Academy Council of The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen writes on the awards (our translation from the original danish, original italics) .

"Superflex…

It must be something that is extremely flexible, highly adaptable.

More flexible than Flextrafik, Skalflex, Kombiflex, Duraflex, Flex Tools, Flextronics, Flex Trading, Flex Pharma, Flexjet, Flex Fitness, etc.

At first, the name might have seemed somewhat ‘90s ironic—like a response to a romantic notion of art with something more anonymous and corporate.

But in a way, Superflex has become what they perhaps only initially claimed to be: an organization that has branched out and gained the ability to influence our infrastructure, urban planning, architecture (or that of fish), public space, outer space, marine environments, beer brewing, alcohol culture, shopping habits, clothing design, furniture design, trinkets, planning processes, perception of time, copyright, economy, gravity, democracy, climate...

Or at least, one could wish that were the case. Because of course, it’s also just art. But of course, it’s also more than just art, or at least more than what we sometimes think art is limited to.

Albert Mertz said: If you can make good art with a machine, why the hell wouldn’t you? And if you can create an art company that can influence and change as many processes as possible, why wouldn’t you? Of course, you should. Of course, Superflex had to. Because if something has value, it must be copied, spread, and shared with everyone, everywhere, all the time.

PLEASE DON’T LEAVE US ALONE.
