    March 4 – March 31, 2010
    MELLEMRUMMET, NY CARLSBERGVEJ 68, COPENHAGEN

During March 2010 we will be showing six new paintings – each 50x90cm - by Nils Erik Gjerdevik in our exhibition space Mellemrummet.

Nils Erik Gjerdevik’s non- figurative paintings challenge the set rules and conventions of painting as genre. His field of interest is the preconditions and potential of the non- figurative and in the schism between rigid concretism and playful forms the works take on the character of a survey of the diverse systems of abstractions in art history.

The liniar structures of constructivism, the ornamental arabesques of art nouveau, the grid system of minimalism, the visual phenomenons of op art, as well as patterns and styles of pop art are all put into play in the art of Nils Erik Gjerdevik. Gjerdevik breaks with the classical principles of composition; the distinctions between foreground and background is blurred, and the perspective seems to point both in and out of the painting. He is flirting with a psychedelic architectural universe in which gravity is eliminated and impossible meetings between subjects themes, styles, and techniques occurs.

Nils Erik Gjerdevik (born 1962 in Oslo) lives and works in Copenhagen.

The artistic practise of the Danish/Norwegian artist Nils Erik Gjerdevik consisted of painting and ceramic sculptures, as well as individual works on paper. Gjerdevik is known for his non-figurative paintings that challenge the set rules and conventions of painting as a genre. He always confronted our idea of how a painting should be presented through his use of peculiar formats, alternative colours and composition rarely built around the classical notion of harmony. His paintings tend toward a more double-edged expression where seemingly divergent ideas and movement meet and become one and the same image. This practice applies to his drawings and his ceramic sculpture work as well.

Gjerdevik exhibited at art institutions including: Hospicio Cabañas, Instituto Cultural Cabañas – ICC, Guadalajara, Mexico; Kunstmuseum Brandts, Denmark; Pratt Manhattan Gallery, New York, USA; National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen. His works are found in public museum collections, including: PAMM – Pérez Art Museum Miami, USA; National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen; Bergen Kunstmuseum, Norway; Malmö Konstmuseum, Sweden; the National Museum, Norway, and Kiel Kunstverein, Germany. Gjerdevik executed numerous public commissions and he was honoured with awards and distinctions for his exceptional contribution to the national and international art scene.
