"Torbjørn Rødland (born 1970 in Stavanger, Norway) works with analog technology and readymade spaces to create photographs that render the everyday uncanny. His images blend the cool, seductive aestheticism of commercial and fashion photography with the layered complexity of a conceptual practice, resulting in ambivalent perspectives that both attract and repulse. This contradictory stance is intentional, the artist’s careful positioning of his work within a fugitive field. From the media-savvy reality critique of 1980s Pictures Generation–era artists, à la Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince, to the seemingly captured moments of Nan Goldin and Larry Clark or the rigorous conceptualism of Christopher Williams and John Baldessari, practitioners working in photography in recent decades have sought to upend notions of authorship and originality in representational imagery while grappling with the concerns of conceptualism within a medium that is inherently grounded in reality. Concurrently, the advent of digital photography has both expedited and removed uncertainty from the process, rendering the analog formats Rødland uses a specialization.

Combining elements from both fleeting and constructed space to summon “a more layered move into the erotic, the psychological, [and] the spiritual,” Rødland strives for a new, hybrid, and unfamiliar (analog) art form, which he calls “transpluralistic photography.” His images channel the mythmaking quality of both contemporary media and art historical paintings, inspired by the ways in which pictures can evoke multiple meanings and complex if ambiguous narratives. Images like Baby, 2007, a portrait of a nude baby sitting upright with one arm positioned across the chest, looking intently into the camera, or Five Tears, 2014, a black-and-white image showing the downturned face of a woman with a stylized blond bowl haircut and viscous tears suspended on her cheeks, could seem to deconstruct religious iconography as much as the often objectifying gaze of commercial photography. For his presentation at The Contemporary Austin, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Texas, Rødland will display a selection of recent and older photographs alongside new photographs created in Austin"- The Contemporary Austin

Stedelijk Museum · Amsterdam opens up again. ⁠ ⁠

This week is the final week of Carlos Amorales solo-exhibition 'The Factory' at the museum ending on June 7, 2020.

‘Carlos Amorales – The Factory’ is the first European retrospective exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Carlos Amorales. Carlos Amorales, 'The Factory' at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam 

'The first ever retrospective exhibition in Europe of the work of Carlos Amorales will open at Stedelijk during Amsterdam Art Weekend 2019. Carlos Amorales – The Factory showcases the work of one of Mexico’s most important contemporary artists from the 1990s to the present day –the most recent piece was made especially for the exhibition. Spanning 14 rooms of the museum, the exhibition includes spatial works, installations, paintings, drawings, videos, prints, textiles, animations, and sound works, which Amorales incorporates in his open, non-chronological, large-scale spatial installations. Visitors will be able to navigate their own route around Amorales’s world of fantastical images and stories that explore the field of tension between the individual and society.' - Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

'One's hopes and goals are as individual as can be, but the ability to imagine oneself in a bettered future is a common human denominator. Lived experiences are processed in our brains while asleep, synthesised into often nonsensical scenarios. Interpreted as omens, parallel realms or mere chemical processes, our dreams inspire us in waking life and are transmuted into reality.

We tend to equate the realisation of our dreams with economic growth. Be it the dreams of a home, an education or simply more possessions, we seem to be unable to escape this equation. However, devastating financial crises are reoccurring, as certain and forceful as high tide or solar eclipse. And the sum of our dream-chasing keeps piling up: What is left is the icons of these failed plans, and the radical and irreversible changes to our planet. What would be an improved future for one will become a disaster for all.

Our dreams and reality are reciprocally linked. But it seems as if this link is somehow corrupted, caught in a simultaneously productive and destructive loop. While it remains unclear whether we need to dream of better plans or execute these plans better, we need to somehow re-calibrate this relationship to change course. ' - SUPERFLEX
